Services for Persons with Disabilities

It is the goal of the Brooklyn College Library to provide equal access to information for all students, faculty and staff. For those with disabilities, the Library can make accommodations to facilitate all activities

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
The front entrance of the Library is wheelchair accessible. There is an automatic door to the left of the front door. All levels of the Library, classrooms and auditorium comply with ADA guidelines for accessibility. All tables in the Library are ADA compliant. Adjustable height tables are located on the lower level at carrels 0G10 (opposite Periodicals Compact Shelving), 0D2 & 3 (opposite Government Documents and Periodicals Compact Shelving) and 0F2 (in the Current Periodicals Reading Room); on the first floor at carrels 1D19 & 20 (opposite the public elevators), 1H2 (opposite Special Collections on the first floor) and Table 1 in the Reserve Reading Room; on the second floor at 2C38 (In front of the New Media Center Desk), 2C6 (near the Music Service Desk and New Media Service Desk) and 2A1 (in front of the Octagonal Reading Room) and in every classroom in the Library.

To access the Multipurpose Room, Library Administration offices, fourth floor group study rooms, 415, 416, 417 and Library staff lounge please call ahead to 718-951-5342 for assistance with the wheelchair lift. Or you can take the staff elevator to the 4th floor which allows for ramp access to all rooms on the fourth floor.

RESTROOMS
Restrooms are available on each floor of the Library and all of them comply with ADA guidelines.

RESCUE ASSISTANCE
Areas of rescue assistance are next to the public and staff elevators on each floor. Persons with disabilities may also sign in with the Security Officer at the front entrance to log your location in the Library in case of an emergency.

BOOK RETRIEVAL
For retrieval of book or other materials, please ask the nearest staff member for assistance. He/she will be pleased to retrieve the material for you. Please make your request at least 45 minutes prior to closing.

PHOTOCOPYING
A student who is entitled to photocopies as an accommodation should arrange this through the Director of the Center for Student Disability Services, 138 Roosevelt Hall, (718) 951-5538

REFERENCE ASSISTANCE
Persons with disabilities may receive reference assistance upon request any time at the Information Services Desk. If you need extensive assistance, please make an appointment with Prof. Miriam Deutch, the Library Coordinator of Services for Persons with Disabilities by calling 781 951-5221 or the appropriate subject specialist. Telephone assistance is available by calling the Information Services Desk at 718 951-5628. Assistance via e-mail is available on the library web site http://library.brooklyn.cuny.edu by clicking on "Ask-a-Librarian." Access to the Library's many databases from home is available on the Library website by clicking on "Databases" then click "Off-Campus Access."
Assistance with library resources can also be provided by the Center for Student Disabilities Services at 138 Roosevelt, 718-951-5538.

RESERVE MATERIAL
Library Reserve Material has very limited loan periods. To make arrangements for extended loan periods please call Mary Pope at (718) 951-5335.

CLICS-(CUNY LIBRARY INTER-CAMPUS SERVICE)
If you find a book in CUNY+ that is not in the Brooklyn College Library but is available at another CUNY library, you can request that it be sent to our library for you to pick up. You will be notified by e-mail when the book is available.
To use CLICS, your e-mail address must be in your library circulation record. Stop by the Circulation Desk to verify that it has been entered. Most books will be available to you within 24 to 48 hours of your request. If the book is not available, you will receive an e-mail notice

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Faculty and students with disabilities may request books and articles from periodicals that are not owned by any CUNY Library through the Research Services Office - at no charge. You may pick up a request form from the Information Services Desk on the first floor or e-mail your request to ILL@brooklyn.cuny.edu or http://library.brooklyn.cuny.edu by clicking on Interlibrary Loan. You will be notified when the material arrives. For more information about this service, please call (718) 951-4414.

CIRCULATION
Please see a full time staff member at the Circulation Desk to arrange to renew materials via telephone. You may also renew books by e-mail at CircDesk@brooklyn.cuny.edu

ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE
The following types of speech, magnifying and print equipment and software are available in the Library and Library Café.
Library: Lower Level: station OD-2 and OD-3 First Floor: station 1D-19, 1D-20; Reserve Reading Room 1F-1; Second Floor: 2C-6,2C-38 has Kurzweil 1000v11, Kurzweil 3000v9 which converts computer text into spoken text; Zoomtext v8.1 magnifies text; Microsoft Text to Speech, Engine 4.0 allows people to dictate into word processing software. Mobile scanner available upon request.
Library Café has the above equipment at stations G3 and G4.

Room 134, First Floor Library has the above software plus Jaws for Windows v8 converts computer text into spoken text, scanner and Braille display. Room 134 may be reserved by calling (718) 951-5335 or upon request at the Circulation Desk. To arrange for training in the use of the Library’s adaptive equipment, please call the Director of the Center of Student Disabilities Services, 138 Roosevelt, (718) 951-5538.
