The New Media Center
The New Media Center, or NMC, provides faculty and students with a variety of services including: a state-of-the-art computing facility, access to the Library's many thousand strong video collection, music listening facilities, and viewing/presentation rooms for small and large groups or classes. The NMC also oversees the use and scheduling of the Woody Tanger Auditorium.

In addition to its day-to-day responsibilities, this year the NMC, in conjunction with Academic Information Technologies and Information Technology Services, has begun a massive project to convert all of the Library owned analog media (music, video, images and documents) into digital format that will eventually be readily accessible via the Internet to faculty and students from on and off campus.

Computing Facility
The NMC computing facility is comprised of 98 Dell PCs and 18 Macintosh G4 towers. Available software applications include: Microsoft Office suite; SPSS; Web browsers; the Library’s online catalog, CUNY+; and much more. The availability of the computers at any given time in the NMC can be monitored at: http://websql.brooklyn.cuny.edu/lab/

Viewing/Presentation Rooms
All viewing rooms are located on the 2nd floor. Reservations can be made in advance to ensure availability. Each room has an amplified sound system; video playback equipment (DVD/VHS); and can also play audio CDs. Room types are as follows:

  • four small rooms (240, 241, 280, 281) capable of seating six to eight, equipped with 17” LCD displays;
  • one medium-sized room (283) seating 15-20 that contains a 42” plasma monitor with VGA video input for laptop presentations (the room also has a data jack);
  • one large room (242) seating 35 with tablet desks, data capability, a ceiling mounted projector and VGA input.
If you are interested in finding out what videos the Library owns search CUNY+. For example, if you are looking for Shakespeare on video go to the guided search screen and type shakespeare as an author and limit the search to visual materials. And for Music sound recordings, once again on the guided search screen, search Mozart as an author and sound recording as an "all fields" keyword.

The New Media Center maintains the same hours as the Library including breaks and holidays. Visit the NMC Service Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Library for further assistance or call x5327.

If you any special events or technical needs that the NMC might be able to help you with, including reserving the Library's auditorium, contact: Nick Johnson, the day manager, (NJohnson@brooklyn.cuny.edu); or Harold Wilson, the night & weekend manager (HWilson@brooklyn.cuny.edu).
