Arrangement Note

The Hank Kaplan Boxing Archive is arranged into twenty subgroups, which maintain Kaplan's original order as closely as possible. Though Kaplan did not have a complete catalog of his materials, nor a formalized system of arrangement, there was a very clear order to the majority of the collection. The archivists did divide the collection into distinct subgroups based on either the subject matter (ex. subgroups Fighters by Surname and Bouts) or the format of the material (ex. subgroups Photographs and Scrapbooks). Most of the subgroups were clearly identifiable based on Kaplan's original order. However, some of the subgroups were not as easy to identify, and the archivists imposed an order that logically fit into Kaplan's larger perspective.
