SERIES 1: PUBLISHED ARTICLES

3 boxes, 1.5 cubic feet This series contains published articles only. They are listed primarily in alphabetical order, such as an article about Andre Malreaux, one about Freud's Deja Vu on the Acropolis, another on John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck, and one on Marcel Proust. There are also published articles here on Psychoanalysis and Literature, Spinoza und Nietzsche (in German), Thomas Mann's New Message, and The Use of Myth in Kafka and Mann.


SERIES 2: PUBLISHED ARTICLES - MISCELLANEOUS

1 box, .5 cubic feet The articles in this series are a combination of English and German language --primarily about Europeans of note like Gide, Freud, Marx, Nietzsche. The topics that are mentioned in some of these articles cover a wide variety of subjects. They describe French myth, cosmic exile, existentialism, literary criticism, contemporary literature, and heroic despair.


SERIES 3: PUBLISHED REVIEWS AND LETTERS

1 box , .5 cubic feet The published reviews that can be found in this series are basically two-fold: there are some that have been written by individuals describing Dr. Slochower's works, and other reviews that have been written by Dr. Slochower describing other individuals' works. There are reviews on several of Dr. Slochower's books, such as No Voice is Wholly Lost, Thomas Mann's Joseph Story, and On Richard Dehmel: The Man and the Poet. Dr. Slochower, in his reviews, mainly covers philosophical articles such as From Hegel to Marx, Philosophical Abstracts, and Philosophical Abstracts .


SERIES 4: TYPESCRIPTS FOR ARTICLES AND BOOKS

1 box, .5 cubic feet This series encompasses a wide assortment of typescripts and galleys for articles and books. Some of the typescripts on view here: Art as Revolution, Benjamin Appell, Emerson, Goethe and the New England Transcendentalism, Group Psychotherapy & the Philosohy of John Dewey, The 1930s Years of Buoyancy and Promise, Spinoza and Goethe, and Our Great Myths.


SERIES 5: FASCISM AND HITLER

1 box, .5 cubic feet The material here includes numerous miscellaneous articles with regard to Fascism in Germany. There are articles written by Dr Harry Slochower, others that were written by different individuals. There are some 1980s AIA newsclippings here as well.


SERIES 6: MISCELLANEOUS PERIODICALS AND ARTICLES
FROM DR SLOCHOWER'S PERSONAL LIBRARY

1 box, .5 cubic feet On view in this series are a number of articles by Dr. Slochower written in the German language. In addition, there are articles written by George F. Mahl, miscellaneous journal articles, and some thoughts and viewpoints on the biography of Maynard Solomon.


SERIES 7: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS

17 boxes, 8.5 cubic feet This series depicts the varied collection of books that Dr Slochower had in his library. The first box bears several periodicals including Jewish Currents, Psyche, and Science and Society. The balance of Dr Slochower's sixteen boxes of books have been alphabetized (although there are some in German, most of them are in the English language), such as Dante Alighieri's The Paradiso of Dante and Aristotle on the Art of Poetry, several books written by Friedrich Engels, some written by Andre Gide, Aldous Huxley, Karl Marx, John Stuart Mill (Utilitarianism), and George Santayana. Finally, there are books here that Dr Harry Slochower wrote himself.


SERIES 8: ASSOCIATION FOR APPLIED PSYCHOANALYSIS

1 box, .5 cubic feet The material in this series contains correspondence, fliers and advertisements, minutes of executive Board Meetings (between 1960-79), and some newsletters. There is also a folder here that bears a paper delivered by Heinz Kohut at an Annual Meeting (1959).


SERIES 9: AMERICAN IMAGO

1 box, .5 cubic feet Dr Harry Slochower was editor in chief of the psychoanalytic quarterly American Imago from 1964 until he died in 1991. This series contains articles (for consideration), business correspondence, comic strips, contracts and legal correspondence. In addition, there are also several essays, some official data, miscellaneous papers, as well as newsclippings in this series.


SERIES 10: INCOMING CORRESPONDENCE

1 box, .5 cubic feet The incoming correspondence in this series is in alphabetical order. There are files that begin with Sholom Asch and W. H. Auden (novelists), to Heinz Hartman (psychoanalyst) and Friedrich Wolf. There is also some correspondence that is unidentified.


SERIES 11: OUTGOING CORRESPONDENCE

1 box, .5 cubic feet The outgoing correspondence here is in a chronological order listed as follows: 1920-29, 1930-39, 1940-49, etc.


SERIES 12: NOTES ON LECTURES

1 box, .5 cubic feet The lecture notes in this series are varied -- a number of them are handwritten, others contain miscellaneous notes. There are conference schedules, lecture announcements, notes on Freud, Jung, and material about symbols and symbolism. In addition, notes can be found here on religion, Spinoza, seminars and conventions, as well as notes on lectures for the Bollingen Foundation.


SERIES 13: GRADE BOOKS

1 box, .5 cubic feet This series contains grade books. There are grade books from 1930-31, 1932-33, 1933-34, 1935-36, 1937-38, etc.


SERIES 14: RAPP -COUDERT AND McCARREN COURT PROCEEDINGS
AND RELATED DATA

1 box, .5 cubic feet This series contains the more sensitive material and controversial aspects of Dr. Slochower's life, and the questions regarding accusations of his (supposed) Communist Party affiliation. There is correspondence on McCarthyism, letters from Dr. Slochower regarding his dismissal from Brooklyn College in 1952-53, material covering the investigation(s), as well as hearing transcripts. On view in this series is the Supreme Court reversal, notes on informants, and a telegram that Dr. Slochower received from his students (1950s).


SERIES 15: PERSONAL DATA

2 boxes, .5 cubic feet Series 15 has diaries between the years 1915 and 1924, date books, address lists, checks and donations, letters about the "Festschrift 1979," and personal and financial data. There is a folder that contains biographical information, 1930s course offerings, curriculum vitae, lists with phone numbers, a marriage contract, and photographs. There are also several German school notebooks, and summer courses that were once offered at the University of Berlin.
