English 1/Library Workshop Program
The English 1/Library Workshop Program fulfills the Basic Skills requirement for English 1 library instruction. These sessions are of great value to students in giving them an orientation to the library's services and resources.
Library Workshops are 50 minutes each and cover the following material: Orientation to library services; Overview of library research tools; CUNY+ catalog; Finding articles; Organization of library materials (Library of Congress Subject Headings).
The following options are available:
- English 1 instructors who wish to attend with their entire class may schedule an English 1/Library workshop at least two weeks in advance. Call early to ensure your preferred date. To schedule a session please contact Prof.
James Castiglione at castiglione@brooklyn.cuny.edu or Ms. Donaree Brown in the Information Services office at (718) 951-5340.
- English 1 instructors may require their students to come to a pre-scheduled English 1/Library Workshop. Students will be given a receipt by the librarian teaching the workshop as proof of attendance. Students may reserve a space in a workshop, in-person, at the reference desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to view this semester's workshop schedule.
Please be sure to tell your students about this college-wide requirement early in the semester.
NB: students who are retaking English 1 must retake the library workshop.
Library Research Instruction/English 2
Library Research sessions for English 2 courses enhance student learning of research resources and techniques - a stated objective of English 2.
Among the topics covered in library instruction are:
- How to choose and use subject-specific journal databases to find relevant articles
- How to do advanced searching in the CUNY+ catalog
- How to evaluate information and its sources for quality
- How to cite research sources
- How to use the Web for scholarly research (yes, scholarly information is on the Web!)
- How to target search strategies to fit course assignments
- Plus any specific requests you may have
NB: Library research sessions are most effective when students already have their research assignments.
Subject-Specific Library Research Instruction
Our subject area specialist librarians can customize library research instruction for students in a specific course or related to a specific research project. Please contact a subject specialist to arrange for an instruction session in the library.
