“I have created numerous signs and flyers this year to assist users in locating various units of the Library around campus, and specific services within locations. I'm certain that there is at least a master's thesis in behavioral psychology waiting to be written, based on our experiences. Certainly no one can fault us for our efforts and intent.” Jane Cramer, Government Publications & Microforms Librarian

Suddenly, the Library was no longer at the crossroads of the campus. The move of the bulk of the circulating collections to the western-most edge of Brooklyn College certainly taught us the importance of that old real estate adage, “Location, location, location.” It was not easy for readers to find us, or to determine which services and collections were located where, and long before the move we embarked upon a major signage program, spearheaded by Jane Cramer.

Signs led students and faculty from the construction fence surrounding the old Library, to our several temporary locations. They advertised what was located where. Inside Roosevelt, a complex network of signs showed the way to units that are spread across multiple floors in both Roosevelt and Roosevelt Extension.

The Winter 2000 issue of Access, the Library/AIT e-zine, constituted a complete guide to the Library’s relocation, including spaces, services, and hours. In the spring 2000 Jane Cramer created a campus “fun map” depicting several different routes to the Field Library and our other locations (the scenic route, the shortest route, etc.) and including the time required to reach various locations and food vendors to be found along the way. The map was published in color and widely distributed to students.
