Theme III: The Once & Future Library

Some might think it challenging or even bothersome to keep the campus well informed about progress in building the new Library, but Library and AIT staff found this to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the Project.

The V-Tours

Virtual tours of the new Library were the brainchild of Chief Librarian Barbra
Higginbotham
, but the tremendous amount of conceptualization, planning, and technological
skill required to bring this project to life were provided by Project Manager Marla
Appelbaum
and Assistant Director for Library Systems Alex Rudshteyn and his stalwart
band of student staff. Mary Shea, Assistant to the Chief Librarian, is the voice of the V-
tours.

The seven tours (exterior; floors L through four; furniture and finishes) began as a series
of electronic newsletters to members of the College community, designed to sustain and
heighten campus interest in the Project--to make each member of the College community
feel fully involved. Each tour was rolled out as it was completed. Today, they are all
available from the Library website, as well as on CD. Mr. Rudshteyn's staff have
continued to tweak and improve their product (which is optimized for Internet Explorer),
building it for both high and low speed connections, and for RealVideo as well as
PowerPoint. The V-tours were showcased at the November 1, 2000, Topping Off Party and
distributed to guests on CD. This set off a flurry of interest on the part of Public
Relations, and our CDs have since traveled far and wide.
