THEME IV: Expanding Access to E-Resources:
The Proxy Server

· Faculty Access
In the spring 2000 faculty received full and easy access to a Brooklyn College proxy server that provides them with off-campus access to all of our e-resources. In the fall 2000 Library staff mounted a full-scale public relations campaign for the new service (including flyers, e-mail, and an announcement in the fall Faculty Bulletin) and placed simple instructions on the Library website.
· Student Access
Proxy access for students, long a Library goal, became a reality on Monday, January 29, 2001, at the start of the spring semester. Librarians are aggressively publicizing this valuable service (which requires that students use their Brooklyn College e-mail accounts), and working with ITS to simplify the student e-mail page so that it presents students with fewer and more meaningful choices. There is a link to this page from the Library's student proxy page. Brooklyn College is the first CUNY campus to offer proxy access to students, and we appreciate the cooperation of our colleagues in ITS.
· The Library Button
http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/library/training/html/libbutton.htm Now that students have access to our thousands of e-resources from any location, at any hour of the day, webmistress Beth Evans has placed on the Library site a handy button (and instructions for installing it) which faculty can add to their course sites-one click will take students to our electronic products, to any subset of these products, or to any area of the Library site the instructor designates.
