Theme V: Incorporating Technology With Teaching

"This year, I have sensed a major change in the atmosphere at Brooklyn College. In terms of Web-assisted, I believe that we are approaching a "critical mass." Groups of faculty, rather than individual faculty, are approaching AIT. When we go to department meetings the level of interest is higher than in previous visits. The conference on the e-book in April 2000 drew more than two hundred participants. Technology is being employed in over 170 courses, with many of the course sites going beyond the simple syllabus-and-hours level." Howard Spivak, Director for Library Systems & Academic Information Technologies

"Brooklyn seems poised to take technology to new levels. In addition, AIT has never been better equipped to take advantage of this enhanced atmosphere. Jim [Cai] and Sylvie [Richards] have enhanced the group with much needed expertise and manpower. The CAs can be used more effectively now that there are more professionals to supervise their efforts. Blackboard has been introduced as our learning platform of the future. It is a platform of very broad appeal --even those who have expressed no wish to alter their courses perk up when we describe how course materials can be made available 24/7 and changed or updated at a moment’s notice." “Online education has the force of inevitability. But is it good? ... Ultimately,
the online revolution will make us think differently about the nature of the
university.” James Traub, “This Campus is Being Simulated,” New York
