The CUNY Student Technology Fee


By late May, we knew we had $100,000 to spend on new e-resources: there began approximately three months of innocent euphoria. Faculty were consulted, and lists of lovely new products were compiled and submitted. Next came a very rude awakening.

First, there was inflation: we simply hadn't the funds to renew every product to which we had subscribed the year before. Reluctantly, the subject specialists were asked to work with faculty to identify titles that could be cancelled, or redirected for Tech Fee funding. But, that was not enough: once a $333,333 hold-back in the Library's budget became a $166,666 cut, again we turned to Tech Fee funds to renew existing resources. In the end, our $100,000 windfall was largely used to avoid cancelling existing resources. Only a few new titles were added, and these are marked in a chart that appears below.
