This chart shows that complex spending is a fact of life. Money and resources come from many different directions, and many items are bought cooperatively, often through small and perhaps unstable consortia. If any one of our partners pulls out or cuts back, we are in trouble.
The way in which electronic journal subscriptions are sold means that we can no longer make cancellations title by title. Instead, when we cancel it must be package by package: not one journal at a time, but dozens of journals at a throw. When IDEAL was cut, we lost 175 titles in one fell swoop. The flexibility we once had is gone forever.
The price we pay for electronic information has continued to grow. The following table represents 2000-2001 costs. In some cases, we have purchased access in terms of a given number of simultaneous users.
