Expanding Access to E-Resources

Every electronic resource is made available to readers via our Class B IP address, which allows access from anywhere on campus--the Library, faculty and staff offices, student labs, and the Library Café.

The CUNY central office uses RPA (Remote Patron Authentication) to provide remote access for readers to the products it funds, and the Library has established a proxy service that gives both faculty and students access from home to all our e-resources--both Brooklyn-funded and CUNY-funded.

Proxy access for students became a reality at the start of the spring semester 2001. Librarians aggressively publicized this valuable service and set up a Web page instructing students how to configure their browsers for proxy access. AIT staff created multimedia instructions for readers who prefer that approach. Brooklyn College was the first CUNY campus to offer proxy access to students, and we appreciate the assistance of our colleagues in ITS.

Unfortunately, librarians have identified a number of problems students and faculty routinely encounter when configuring their browsers for proxy access. Even though both Library and Library Café staff are trained to troubleshoot technical support for this service, telephone calls from confused students and instructors continue to pour in. In October 2001 Library and AIT staff met with colleagues in ITS to explore new and simplified ways of offering proxy access. One product we suggested was EZProxy http://www.usefulutilities.com/ezproxy/, in use throughout the State University of New York. Discussions continue
