Music Library

"Conservatory faculty ... are very pleased with the sumptuous new surroundings and the availability of the collections on the open shelves, once again. " Honora Raphael, Music Librarian
"I am reaping the promised rewards of being in close proximity to the media center. Since Trudy Bell retired in 1990 the Music Library has suffered for the lack of an on-site audio equipment expert. I am very grateful for Nick's attention to the proper functioning of our listening equipment and I trust that his recommendations are acted on." Honora Raphael, Music Librarian

  • The Music Inventory
From January through May 2002 an inventory of the entire circulating music collection (books and scores) was undertaken. Marguerite Iskenderian planned this project very carefully and completed it before the materials (all housed in the Field Library) were moved to the new Library. College Assistants Shady Noman (no, not a pseudonym) and John Arruda worked alongside her; when the project was complete, the music librarian was delighted. Now all music materials, both circulating and reference, are represented in the online catalog.

  • Music and the Move to the New Library
Like all other Library units, in the fall 2002 Music had a plethora of move-related issues to face and resolve. There were range-end labels to be made, and hundreds of old cabinets of compact discs, videos, microfilm, and libretti to be unpacked and rehoused in new cabinets. The Music Library came through with flying colors and has adapted well to its new space on the second floor, shared with the New Media Center.

  • Music Finds New Clients
The proximity of half of the Main Library's circulating book collection and the New Media Center with its 100+ workstations have meant that the music librarian and her staff are helping many more "general" Library users than strictly "music" patrons. Librarian Honora Raphael notes that "this is a challenge, but one I am qualified to deal with it. It also involves constant vigilance that the many support staff ... comport themselves appropriately in the public areas and that they understand the limitations of their expertise when it comes to assisting library patrons."
