  Interns

Internships often lead to real-life jobs, and several units in the Library and Academic IT support them.

  • The Information Services unit has developed a strong internship program with both high schools and colleges. This past year, Professor Beth Evans, the de facto program coordinator, sponsored two high school student interns from the Brooklyn College Academy. Keisha Hoyte and Zoe Soleyn (whose paid internships were sponsored by their school) each had the opportunity to experience an academic work setting and get a glimpse of how a library operates.

  • The minor in Archival Studies and Community Documentation includes a credit-bearing internship. This year Donna Grant interned at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, while Jennifer Borishansky completed a program at the Museum of Natural History.

  • Library Systems and Academic IT have mature internship programs whose graduates go on to land well-paying jobs. During the last year, our interns included:

    Project: Digitizing Project (research on software and hardware; set up and testing of equipment; creating instructions and manuals)

    Intern: Alex Borovinskiy, Olga Plashkova, Brooklyn College undergraduates
    Project: Digitizing Project (creating instructions and manuals; conversion of different media types into digital format)

    Project: Create Web site for the Farm Labor Project (Special Collections)

  • The Archives and Special Collections also offer unique internship opportunities, for Brooklyn College students, library school students, and students from the Brooklyn College Academy.

    Spring 2002
    Intern: Katherine Kennedy, Brooklyn College History major enrolled in the Minor in Curatorial Studies
    Project: Process the Papers of the Brooklyn College Women's Center and create a guide for them

    Intern: Marisa Martinelli, Brooklyn College graduate student in History
    Project: Research our first exhibit in the new Library, Treasures from the Archives, and pull items for it

    Intern: Claire Flemming, Pratt Institute MLS program
    Project: Process the Brooklyn Borough Presidents Collection and create a finding aid for it

    Intern: Jennifer Waxman, CUNY graduate student
    Project: Process the USS Brooklyn Collection and create a guide for it

    Fall 2002
    Intern: Carlos Abdu, Brooklyn College Academy
    Project: Encapsulate in mylar fragile documents from the Loretta Bender Collection

    Intern: Daniella Romano, Pratt Institute MLS program
    Project: Process the Kingsborough Historical Society Collection.
