In 2003-2004 the Music Library's collection building woes were a microcosm of the entire Library's:

"The materials budget for traditional materials such as books, music scores, sound- and video-recordings has been woefully inadequate for years and this year has been no exception. My materials budget for this year was, as it was for most of my bibliographer-colleagues, a pitiful $2,000. I had to hold back $1,500 of it to pay for extremely expensive and indispensable composer complete works editions and monumental editions, scholarly publications that are the heart of a serious music collection.

"An additional $500 in CCD money was made available in April, but it had to be used to sustain monograph continuation subscriptions that both the Conservatory of Music and I agree are essential purchases. An infusion of several thousand dollars from the Walter Gerboth Library Fund has resulted in new book orders, as well as in payment of invoices for standing orders (music continuations) that had been left unpaid for as long as two years."
