Gifts of Special Note, 2004-2005
- Morton Vogelson Gift for Judaica: In his will San Diego resident Morton Vogelson left the Library $25,000 for the purchase of Judaica. We have set aside $15,000 of the gift as an endowment and will spend the remaining $10,000 over the course of this and the coming academic year. With the assistance of Judaic Studies chair Sara Reguer, we identified a group of faculty whose teaching and research embrace elements of Judaica and solicited their suggestions for the $10,000. Associate Librarian for Collection Development Susan Vaughn and bibliographer for Judaic Studies Eva Dimova-Angelov are working with faculty to evaluate requests and make final spending decisions.
- Milton & Jacqueline Esterow Art Book Collection: This collection of 7,600 titles is the gift of Milton Esterow, one-time NY Times reporter and art critic and current owner of Art News. Next to the Paolella collection (over 10,000 books) this is the largest collection the Library has received in recent memory. The deed of gift for the Esterow collection was signed November 17, 2004, and the books were moved to the Library December 15-16. Slava Polishchuk and his wife Asya Dodina, artists and Library staff members, are working on book plate designs; a dedication ceremony and reception will be planned, once the book plate design is selected.
- Leonard Ashley Gift: Retired professor of English Leonard Ashley, an avid book reviewer, annually gives us his review copies. The value of these brand-new scholarly monographs generally comes in at around $12,000, but this year their value is an enormous $21,000. We have had a plaque made to acknowledge Professor Ashley's substantial generosity to the Library, and he received a special mention at this year's Author Party.
- Al Tanger Gift: We are in the third year of alumnus Al Tanger's 10-year gift to the Library of $20,000 per annum for journals. This money is vital to our collections, and we greatly appreciate Mr. Tanger's generosity.
