WHAT I LEARNED FROM JACKIE ROBINSON
April 19, 2005
Celebrating a major Brooklyn anniversary--50 years since the Brooklyn Dodgers’ victory in the subway series–-author Burton Rocks talked about his new book, co-authored with former Dodger Carl Erskine. The evening began with the musical strains of the "Dodger Jump" and continued with the taped interview of a euphoric Brooklynite, filmed immediately after the victory. Next Borough Historian Ron Schweiger read a proclamation from Borough President and Brooklyn College alumnus Marty Markowitz, lauding our event. Ron regaled the audience with his encyclopedic knowledge of Brooklyn and displayed some wonderful Dodger memorabilia. The evening's centerpiece was the stimulating talk by Burton Rocks, who made it clear that Jackie Robinson was much more than a great ballplayer.
SPRING SEMINAR: PERSONAL LIBERTIES IN THE AGE OF TERRORISM
May 13, 2005
This event was our sixth spring seminar, the third co-sponsored with METRO. Speakers included Norman Siegel, civil liberties lawyer and Brooklyn College alumnus; Daniel Lyons, Associate Division Counsel with the FBI; and Marcia Hofmann, Attorney at the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington DC. The presenters covered issues such as the scope of the USA Patriot Act, the accumulation of vast amounts of electronic information about ordinary citizens, and mass surveillance. Q&A was lively, to say the least!
COMING ATTRACTIONS!
A number of events are in the works for next year: A celebration of the lives of poets and Brooklyn College alumni Friend, Kallman, & Norse; a forum on America's Mayor (Giuliani); and a fresh crop of performers for the Library Guitar Series. The WTA’s new projector will make film events more appealing. We are also considering an events telephone line.
COMMUNITY ACCESS
The number of Friends of the Library continues to grow, as more and more people from the surrounding community as well as alumni are eager to use the resources in the new Library. From June 2004 to May 2005 we collected about $10,000 in donations. This money used to support the conservator and the conservation program.
