Library Reorganization, 2004-2005
In 2004-2005 the Library underwent a major restructuring, one affecting every division. In some cases, lines (and the people on them) were moved from one unit to another; in others, units were reconfigured and their work redefined. The reorganization included these changes:
-
Combining the three student labs (Library Cafe, New Media Center, Library Lower Level Lab) under one manager, Suzie Samuel. [October 2004]
- Moving Research Services (interlibrary loan) from Research & Access Services to Technical Services. The unit will be physically relocated to Technical Services to permit the expansion of Information Services into the space it presently occupies; since much of the work the unit does is similar to Technical Services work, a change in the reporting relationship also made sense. [December 2004]
- Separating the division of Information Services & Distinctive Collections into two units, each reporting to a Cabinet-level position. These were two separate units until the early 1990s when budget constraints forced the Library to combine them. In the present configuration, twenty full-time faculty and staff report to one Cabinet member; in the new configuration, there will be ten full-time people in one unit (Distinctive Collections), eleven in the other (Information Services), a much better balance. [September 2005]
- Strengthening collection development and administrative services by transferring a position from Technical Services to the fourth floor. [February 2005]
- Strengthening the Archives by transferring a line from Access Services. [March 2005]
