Copyright
- The Library Copyright Committee is responsible for maintaining and making available up-to-date copyright information, as well as advising campus constituencies on issues pertaining to copyright. The committee's emphasis is on copyright issues related to teaching, learning, and research by members of the Brooklyn College community of scholars.
- Judith Wild chaired the Copyright Committee through the end of 2004 at which time Beth Evans resumed the leadership role. Other committee members include Miriam Deutch, Mariana Regalado, Sylvie Richards, Susan Vaughn, and Honora Raphael.
- The Library’s copyright statement appears on our Web site under the heading Research Tools. Members of the college community may send copyright questions to askcopyright@brooklyn.cuny.edu; committee members take turns monitoring mail sent to this address.
- Because of the increasingly draconian measures that the publishing community has taken toward consumers who infringe on music copyright, this year the Copyright Committee reached out to the Conservatory to advise faculty about copyright compliance for their listening assignments. AIT staff are working with the Conservatory to identify ways of providing listening assignments for students in Core 2.2 that do not require students to purchase CDs, yet are also copyright compliant. Mariana Regalado provided faculty with materials on copyright and fair use; she gave music students information about best practices for using copyrighted recorded materials.
- Concurrently, the committee is updating the copyright Web site with concrete examples of compliance for non-book formats.
- In the spring semester the committee received queries regarding music anthologies, cartoons, photocopying, and the Copyright Clearance Center. Two new products/services of the ALA Copyright Advisory Committee have been of great assistance: the Copyright Advisory Network www.librarycopyright.net and Complete Copyright: An Everyday Guide for Librarians by Carrie Russell.
