Scope and Content Note

 

The Astroland Collection consists of a wide variety of information pertaining to Coney Island, Astroland, and particularly the Cyclone rollercoaster.

       The collection is made up of an array of media: photos, slides, negatives, videos, scrapbooks, documents including correspondence), plaques and awards, and a collection of newspaper clippings. Artifacts range in date from the late 1960s up to and including 2007.

       The Astroland papers also have masses of information on the Cyclone even though it was not part of Astroland but was run by the Astroland administrators. Also there is information on the Parachute Jump which was not a part of Astroland, and not a working ride, but a big part of the Coney Island community, and was declared a national landmark in Coney Island.

       Included here as well are VHS’s, mini DVD’s, and CD formats all with dates and titles (except for one video). The videos do not date very far back, but have an array of information about the past and present. There are also many multiples of videos. The photographs, both large and small, depict events, rides, and so forth. There are newspaper clippings of events at the park, journals, and manuals about Astroland or amusement parks in general. There are also plaques and certificates which honoring the park and Dewey Albert the creator of Astroland.

       All the media is in relatively good condition. Since some of the paper documents are not in such good condition, that they have been encapsulated in mylar for protection against any further damage.

       There is no material in this collection that is restricted. It is open for full view to the public and any researcher.
