Overview of Records:
Professor Isabel Mary Skolfield Whittier began her career teaching history to high school students. Thereafter, she taught History at Hunter College in New
York City and was transferred to Brooklyn College when it was founded in
1930. In 1939, the Board of Higher Education for the City of New
York dismissed her claiming that she was incompetent as an instructor.
Miss Whittier appealed her case all the way to the Supreme Court
and was reinstated in June 1942.
This collection offers viewers her legal files, case briefs, legal notes and documents as well as correspondence regarding her court trials.
