Technology Planning & Policy Making

On October 24, 2001, Provost Roberta Matthews invited the Vice-President Steve LittleMark Gold to lunch for a good discussion of technology planning. She and Vice-President Little charged Mark and Barbra with developing both a draft technology plan and a technology policy for Brooklyn College. By Thanksgiving, the draft plan was complete. On January 3, 2002, the provost sent this message to a large group of faculty interested in technology:
"As part of the effort to create a comprehensive technology plan, Steve Little, Barbra Higginbotham, Mark Gold, and I cordially invite you to attend a marathon meeting on Monday, January 28th, from 9 AM to 2PM in SUBO, Occidental/Oriental Rooms (5TH Floor). We will be serving a light breakfast from 8:30 AM and we will, of course, break for lunch.

We are inviting a large group of people, all of whom are involved, in one way or another, with technology and who might be interested (or might not--this is not a command performance!) in helping us shape a plan that will focus our vision, establish our priorities and assure the equitable acquisition and distribution of funds as we move ahead to support our good work and break new ground. We will also be exploring the efficacy of old structures and the advisability of implementing new approaches. If you would like to be part of this effort, please come on the 28th to explore possibilities and have a voice in the shape of future initiatives.

We have published a draft outline of a technology plan that was put together by Mark and Barbra. Their fine thinking and thorough overview will form the basis of our work on the 28th. More materials will be forthcoming in January and at the meeting.

To obtain your copy of the plan for review, please use your web browser to access the link below. The web page will offer you the option of downloading the document in MS-Word or PDF format."
The morning of January 28 turned out to be one of Brooklyn College's more successful planning events. A wonderful mix of classroom faculty, librarians, staff, and members of the administration worked together to examine the draft technology plan, identifying the features they felt were most critical to the College's success and adding new ideas. In the spring semester 2002, the plan will be completed and adopted.
