Theme II:
ASSURING A STUDENT ORIENTED CAMPUS:
Interns

  • Interns
  • Internships often lead to real-life jobs, and several units in the Library and Academic IT support them.

  • The Information Services unit has developed a strong internship program with both high schools and colleges. This past year, Professor Beth Evans, the de facto program coordinator, established contact with the NYC Board of Education's "City as School Program" through which high school students receive both work experience and course credit. Sophia Maldonado, a senior from Madison High School, spent her spring semester working with several members of the professional staff on various Web site projects.

  • Silke Kleindeist, a library school student from Germany, worked with Information Services staff for six weeks on such projects as updating the Library Web site and gathering information about libraries' electronic reserves policies. Over the summer session, the unit hosted Sonia Robinson-Glanville, an intern from the University of the West Indies Library School who worked on several projects including an inventory of the Lincoln Center Institute book collection (with Professor Martha Corpus) and a records survey of the two Brooklyn Caribbean communities (with the staff of the DHP project).

  • The minor in Archival Studies and Community Documentation includes a credit-bearing internship. This year Mary Sydney Rankus wrote background material for the Farm Labor Project. Kendell Howard worked on our women's studies records. Katherine Kennedy began an internship this summer, also with the women's studies records.

  • As part of an internship program at the Brooklyn College Academy, Robert Brown, Shon Pierre, and Danielle Thomas assisted the pagers from September 2000 until May 2001.

  • Library Systems and Academic IT have mature internship programs whose graduates go on to land well-paying jobs. During the last year, our interns included:

  • This summer, Library Systems accepted its first high school intern, Daniel Panzer. Daniel received no payment and interned under no recognized program: he worked with Systems staff for the experience, proving to be one of the most capable interns the unit has ever hosted, often behaving more like a staff member than as a student. Daniel worked on the inventory database and other projects. We missed him when he returned to school in the fall.
