Section III: The Borough of Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce
On March 1 President Kimmich made a presentation to the Chamber of Commerce about technology at Brooklyn College. Nicholas Irons of the AIT staff was part of the team that worked on this initiative: he created the president's PowerPoint presentation.
The Brooklyn Public Library
The Library Cabinet served as consultants to the Brooklyn Public Library project manager and three associate directors for programming and planning a new visual and performing arts library in the BAM cultural complex, and renovation of the main library.
The Brooklyn Transition Center
This program has broadened the Library's engagement with the Brooklyn community. In 2001 nine students from the Center, an alternative high school that prepares students with learning disabilities for the workforce, performed various jobs in the Library. The students assisted the staff by picking up books on tables in the Field and Roosevelt Libraries, sorting books on carts, dusting shelves, and stamping access cards. Their work helped to move the books to the shelvers more quickly and maintained a cleaner and neater Library. Moreover, the Library does a service to these young people by providing a workplace that enables them to feel productive, builds their self-esteem, and permits them to learn how to behave in the workplace. The goal of this program is that these young adults find a job with monetary compensation. The names of the participating students in 2000-2001 were: Elvis Coward, Shelwin Jones, Jessenia Maisonett, Denice Media, Leshawn Winfield, Patrice Williams, Scheron Williams, Joseph Williams, and Elvin Vecchini.
