Section III: The Greater New York Metropolitan Area

  • The Greater New York Metropolitan Area
The main event of Library week was the "Demystifying Copyright" conference. This topic was chosen because of the increasingly complicated and controversial issues regarding copyright for libraries and faculty who are building Web courses. The main speaker was Carrie Russell, a nationally recognized expert on copyright from the American Library Association' Office of Information Technology Policy. We also invited Apple Computer, Blackboard, McGraw-Hill, Prentice Hall, Thomson Learning and XanEdu who exhibited and demonstrated their most up-to-date resources. President Christoph M. Kimmich welcomed guests and thanked each vendor for generously contributing to the lunch for all attendees. Sylvie Richards completed the program with a creative presentation of how to integrate multimedia, e-reserves, course packs and publishers' online resources within Blackboard without violating copyright laws.

This was the first time the Library partnered with private companies on a project of this scale and it proved to be a huge success. The program attracted approximately 150 people from libraries, companies, colleges, and universities in the metropolitan area, New Jersey, and upstate New York, strengthening Brooklyn College's presence in the borough and beyond. The seminar was a community service to the College and the metropolitan area's academic community.

  • The Virtual Core Project Conference
On November 2 we held our capstone conference, "E-Survivor: How to Outperform, Outpace, and Be Outstanding as an Online Instructor," with faculty in attendance from all over the city.
