SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

To create the technological infrastructure that will allow patrons of the Library to transfer citations, library’s catalog search results, and other materials easily without need for special cables, cradles, or device configurations.

Patrons will use the portable devices they already own to receive the information via infrared (IR) beaming from the designated beaming station located on every floor of the Library. These IR beaming stations communicate with the considerable number of devices that are already IR equipped such as PDAs, phones, etc.

For people with these devices, it eliminates the need to print citations or other materials and also gives them the additional benefit of an electronic copy for later incorporation in a bibliography or other document.

Using a floor map of the Library we have created an application that allows patrons to locate the shelf on which the book is located and have the map with shelf highlighted along with the call number transferred over to a handheld device.
